We asked a few questions to Marina Leonidovna:
- Marina Leonidovna, how did it all start?
- When our family got a countryside area, and for me as a purely urban resident who had not previously had a cottage, I imagined a plot in the style of "lawn and barbecue". Gradually, roses, peonies, and lilies appeared. Then greens and cucumbers, and only then, thanks to the neighbors in the cottage, tomatoes. Now the peppers have also appeared.
-Marina Leonidovna, more than 500 varieties - that's a lot - and are there any of them the most favorite?
- It is hard to choose your favorite varieties when there are so many of them. Every year there are new varieties that you like. But I realized that I prefer orange tomatoes and bicolors.
- Is it really possible to grow such interesting varieties of tomatoes in the Leningrad oblast’?
- Sure! You can grow it. Another conversation is that in the north of Leningrad Oblast’ it is difficult to bring them to maturity on a branch. That's why I prefer to grow early- and medium-ripe tomatoes.
- What advice would you give to beginners who decide to grow tomatoes in their backyard?
- Beginners should understand for what purpose they grow them. If for salads and preservation, you need to choose popular, not picky, early-ripening varieties or hybrids. And if for aesthetic pleasure, and only then eat, make dried tomatoes or orange ketchup, similar in color to apricot jam, then choose varieties of fleshy, colorful, rare varieties.
- Could you reveal any secret to get a good result in growing tomatoes?
- There are a lot of tips on growing tomatoes on the Internet now, I try to stick to them. This includes good land, timely fertilizing, shaking brushes for pollination, if you do not have hybrids, and side-shoot removal.
- Thank you, Marina Leonidovna, for the interesting information!
